Managers and Supervisors therefore must have the knowledge, skills and attributes to execute this most important function. This course will teach managers and supervisors how to manage performance, regularly, positively, fairly, consistently and with a clear developmental orientation.

Brief Course Outline

 

Day 1

Welcome and Introductions

Module 1: Context Building

In this module participants will explore and understand how organisations can benefit from an effective performance management process and system. This understanding is created by appreciating how organisations can prevent making the same expensive mistakes and how it can focus its performance along four key value drivers as illustrated by the Balanced Score Card. They will further deepen their understanding about Performance Management by reflecting on its aims, purpose, nature and process.

Module 2: Contracting for performance

In this module participants will improve their knowledge and ability to design performance contracts by:

  • Understanding all the key elements of a performance contract,
  • Designing effective work performance objectives,
  • Applying SMART guidelines to the work performance objectives,
  • Ensuring that work objectives are underpinned with performance standards,
  • Ensuring that each performance objective can be measured via key performance indicators and
  • Practice in drawing up their own performance contract.

 

Lunch

Module 3: Continues Performance Management

In this module participants will come to understand that Performance Management is a continuous management activity that ensures team members receive constant feedback on their performance. Because they will:

Explore the essential elements of a Performance Review,
Gain the knowledge to prepare themselves effectively for such a Review and,
Receive practice in conducting a Performance Review.

Module 4: The active Listening Manager

In this module participants will gain the insight and skills to be an effective Listening Manager.
Because they will:

  • Explore the dos and don’ts of active listening,
  • Explore the negative beliefs stopping positive feedback,
  • Learn how to give positive feedback,
  • Explore negative beliefs stopping negative feedback,
  • Give negative feedback confidently,
  • Explore negative beliefs stopping them from accepting negative feedback and,
  • Learn how to manage negative feedback confidently.

 

Lunch

Module 5: Personal Devlopment Plans

In this module participants will gain insight into the importance of having a development plan linked to their performance reviews and they will gain practical know-how to complete such a plan.
Because they will:

  • Identify team member’s development areas that require change,
  • Understand why it is necessary to change these development areas,
  • Identify obstacles which will hinder the intended change,
  • Devise strategies to overcome these obstacles,
  • Take practical action to initiate the change and,
  • Learn how to implement monitoring mechanisms to ensure change.
