Brief Course Outline

 

Day 1

Welcome and Introductions

Module 1: Identifying Inherent job requirements

The aim of this module is to understand why a detailed job specification which lists the various tasks, duties and responsibilities is important. How this information assists to objectively and fairly assess the job applicant’s suitability (i.e. to compare his or her skills, knowledge and experience against the requirements of the job). Also to recognise and appreciate how without detailed and accurate job specification, there is no objective basis against which to compare the suitability of different applicants.

Module 2: What are Competencies?

The aim of this module is to increase the participants awareness about competencies, what they are and how they are structured. Why competencies are important and its usefulness within the various human resources processes and applications. Further, how to use competency rating scales to accurately evaluate and measure the job applicants’ responses during interviews.

Module 3: Structuring interview Questions

The aim of this module is to help participants master a methodology for developing questions to be used to extract behaviour descriptions / examples from job applicants during the interview. They will be taught how to develop questions to elicit information relevant to specific competences which are inferred from specific situations. The goal of this form of questioning is to elicit from applicants what they have actually done as opposed to what they think should be done. They will be taught how to tap real lived job and life experiences as opposed to hypothetical examples.

Module 4: Interviewing Techniques

The aim of this module is to teach participants how to use different questioning techniques to gather all relevant information from the candidate.

Module 5: Panel Interviewing

The aim of this module is to help participants to create uniformity in the interviewing process to ensure consistency, standardisation and fairness toward all candidates. How to select panel members and create the most appropriate setting for the interviews. To understand the do’s and don’ts of panel interviewing. Finally how to record, discuss and total the applicant scores into one consensus based rating and make selection decisions.

Module 6: Data Integration

The aim of this module is to help participants to objectively compare job applicants, avoid common assessment errors and do data integration.
